Detective Superintendent Pierre Niemans is a well-known police officer. Together with his young colleague Detective Inspector Max Kerkerian, a car thief turned police officer for the thrill of the job, he is sent to the fictional small university town of Guernon in the French Alps to investigate a brutal murder and mutilation, where the victim's body was placed in the fetal position, eyes removed and hands cut off. His investigation leads him to the elite university central to the town, which is attended by Fanny Ferreira, who discovered the body. Detective Inspector Max Kerkerian is in the nearby town of Sarzac investigating the skinheads that dug up a 10-year-old girl, who died in a car accident in 1982, and desecrated her grave. This gang, for some reason, is erasing the girl's past, having previously broken into her old school and stolen her records and photos. Niemans and Kerkerian soon notice the startling connections between their cases, and team up to fully solve them. As more murders around them are committed, the two officers must see just how far beyond these two crimes their case really goes.
